Elderly man headbutts teenager on late night tram

Shocking video of an elderly man headbutting a teenage commuter on the Gold Coast has emerged online.

An altercation broke out on a Surfers Paradise tram at 2.30am this morning after the teenagers were overheard swearing.

In the vision, a man wearing a white singlet can be seen arguing with the elderly man.

The elderly man then becomes aggressive with a blonde, shaggy-haired teenager and other commuters appear to now be ignoring the confrontation after having previously attempting to quell it.

9NEWS understands the 78-year-old man was offended by what he heard and took matters into his own hands, trying to punch and headbutt the teens.

"There's no hard feelings and I don't want the man to get into trouble," one of the victims told 9NEWS.

The matter was not reported to police and will not be investigated.
