How the elderly can prevent potentially deadly falls

One in three people over 65 experience a fall each year, risking serious injury and even death.

Today experts at an aged care conference in Sydney were given an overview of the best measures to prevent the problem.

The University of Sydney's Professor Robert Cumming told the conference that tai chi and exercises that focused on balance should be done at least three hours a week.

He also recommended avoiding sleeping tablets.

"It may help them sleep for a short time, but that benefit goes away and they're left with that increased risk of falling," he said.

Modifying the home with expert help can also make a difference.

Vitamin D, gained through sun exposure, can be protective - but aged care residents often don't get outside enough.

"So probably everyone living in a nursing home should be on a vitamin D supplement," he said.

Others also spruiked the benefits of exercise.

"Our recent review found that being involved with a high quality exercise program could actually reduce the risk of falls by 40 percent," Professor Cathie Sherrington said.

For 73-year-old Cherie Thompson, simple exercises in the home have worked wonders.

"My general sense of wellbeing is better," she said.

"You are the answer, use it or lose it."
