A man has fired a shot into a hotel in Sydney's inner west after a security guard pushed him out a door and attempted to lock him out.

Police say the man entered the hotel on Livingstone Road in Petersham at about 8.20pm on Saturday armed with a sawn-off rifle and threatened a security guard and patrons.

The guard followed the man as he walked through the hotel then pushed him out a door and attempted to lock him out.

The man then fired a shot through a glass panel but no one was injured, police said.

The offender then re-entered the hotel and after engaging in a scuffle with the security guard he fled the scene.

The offender is described as being Caucasian, of thin build, tall, and with blond facial hair. He was wearing a black baseball cap, a black top, a black jacket, dark long pants, and a black and green bandanna.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact them.
