Education estimates get more time

Education officials will be further quizzed about the government's plans to deregulate universities.

The Senate's education and employment committee is holding an extra day of estimates on Friday to wrap up questions on topics it didn't get to cover in October.

Senators are expected to look at the full range of government work in higher education but the planned changes are likely to loom large.

The government wants to deregulate university fees, expand commonwealth funding to private providers and degrees below bachelor level, cut the level of per-student funding and increase interest rates on HECS.

The committee has already looked specifically at these changes, opposed by Labor and the Greens, in a separate inquiry.

On Friday, it will also quiz bureaucrats on topics related to employment services, industrial relations and workers' compensation.
