Editor of The Age leaves Fairfax

Fairfax Media has announced editor-in-chief of The Age newspaper Andrew Holden is leaving the company.

Mr Holden, who has been in charge of the Melbourne masthead since 2012, will be replaced in the interim by deputy editor Mark Forbes.

Fairfax Media editorial director Sean Aylmer said in a statement that following discussions, Mr Holden had decided to leave the company.

"Andrew has successfully led The Age through a period of great transition and we thank him for the contribution he has made and wish him well for the future," Mr Aylmer said.

But the announcement on Wednesday comes after Fairfax revealed it was set to shed another 70 jobs, and in the wake of significant declines in digital subscriptions and print sales at The Age.

Print sales in the last three months of 2015 fell to 97,503, a decline of 8.7 per cent compared to the same period in the previous year.

"After eight years of leading newsrooms through many challenges, I'm looking forward to new opportunities," Mr Holden said in a statement.

Mr Holden had been with the company for 13 years.
