'It was like a grenade': Homemade e-bike battery explodes mid-ride in Adelaide

A cyclist had the shock of their lives when their homemade e-bike battery exploded mid-ride in Adelaide.

Footage shows the rider struggling with a smoking e-bike in Salisbury North this afternoon before several explosions.

"It was like fireworks and very smokey," a witness said.

It was the homemade battery that had ignited and the rider can be seen trying to kick it clear of the rest of the bike before the explosion.

"None of us wanted to go near it, it was like a grenade just shooting everywhere," a witness said.

It threw out fireworks of dangerous debris and it's the third similar blast in the city in the past two weeks.

Authorities are warning residents to always ensure they buy an e-bike from a reputable manufacturer and not to build them at home.
