Eastman hearing begins in Supreme Court

Prosecutors are making a last-ditch bid to persuade a Canberra court to keep convicted police killer David Eastman behind bars.
The ACT Supreme Court is deciding on Eastman's fate following an inquiry report that recommended his conviction for the 1989 murder of Australian Federal Police assistant commissioner Colin Winchester be quashed.
Former Northern Territory chief justice Brian Martin found there was a substantial miscarriage of justice at Eastman's 1995 trial and he should be granted a pardon.

But the Director of Public Prosecutions is arguing Eastman's conviction should be affirmed.
The hearing is set down for two days, with Eastman viewing by closed circuit television from the ACT's prison.
