Mother of Porsche driver Richard Pusey breaks silence over Eastern Freeway tragedy

The mother of alleged speeding Porsche driver Richard Pusey has spoken of her "disgust" over her son's alleged involvement in the Eastern Freeway tragedy, revealing the family had been estranged from the 41-year-old for some time.

Speaking on 3AW this morning, Mr Pusey's mother said she had decided to come forward after family members started to receive threats following the crash which killed four police officers on last Wednesday.

The woman said she did not think it was "fair" their family had been threatened because they are just as "devastated" by the tragedy as the rest of the country.

"We are disgusted as you can imagine and he doesn't reflect any other member of the family at all in his behaviour," she told Neil Mitchell.

"We were incredibly shocked and deeply ashamed by the events that unfolded surrounding the accident and thereafter.

"Our family have been under immense public and media scrutiny since that time in a quest to find some explanation as to Richard's actions in this catastrophic event.

"This is an insight we are unable to provide. We as a family have had our lives thrust into the spotlight by association and all we can say is we feel the same sense of devastation as the community at this time."

Mr Pusey has been charged with nine offences, including driving at a dangerous speed, reckless conduct endangering life, failing to render assistance and drug possession. He remains in custody on remand.

His mother described the accident as "unimaginable and horrific and has left the family with several questions yet very few answers.

"We extend our deepest heartfelt sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the four officers that so tragically lost their lives in the execution of their police duties," she said.

"The pain and sense of loss at this time is beyond comprehension and there is little that can be said to ease the suffering of those that have lost someone special."
