Draft laws cementing a treaty which ends a long-running ocean border dispute between Australia and East Timor have been introduced to federal parliament.

The legislation gives rise to the Greater Sunrise Special Regime, which will see the neighbouring nations share the spoils from the sea's petroleum deposits.

An authority will be established to act on behalf of Australia and East Timor to facilitate joint management of the new area, cabinet minister Dan Tehan told the lower house as he introduced the bill on Wednesday.
