E-bike recalled over fears frame will crack and crash

Two types of e-bikes are being recalled over fears the frame may break while in use.

Bicycle manufacturer Orbea has issued the recall for its Optima step-through Asphalt e-bike and Comfort e-bike.

The bikes were sold between October 1 in 2019 to December 31 in 2020 online and in select stores nationally.

The affected models have a vehicle identification number (VIN) containing SNKIN19A.

“A fault in the bike’s frame welding may cause the frame to break while in use,” the recall notice said.

“Risk of death, serious injury or property damage (including to other road users) if the bike’s frame breaks while in use and causes an accident.”

The ACCC’s Product Safety website said the bikes were sold at the following stores:

• Crooze - Queensland
• Electric Bikes Brisbane - Queensland
• Taylor Cycles - Queensland
• Fast Lane - Western Australia
• Londsdale Street Cyclery - Australian Capital Territory
• Melbourne Electric Bikes - Victoria
• iBikes Australia - Victoria
• Rye Bike Shop - Victoria
• Strath Bike and Power - Victoria
• Tas Electric Vehicles - Tasmania
• The Rolling Fix - New South Wales
• Velo 2 Velo - New South Wales

Bike owners should stop using the bike and check the VIN engraved on the frame.

If the bike’s VIN contains SNKIN19A, customers should contact their nearest Orbea dear to arrange for a free replacement.
