Dutton reportedly back on security council

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is reportedly offering an enhanced role for Peter Dutton in leadership strategy and is preparing to promote a new generation of right-wing MPs.

Mr Turnbull is reaching out to conservative Liberals disaffected by Tony Abbott's removal and the election result, The Australian reports.

It says the prime minister is expected to include Mr Dutton, the immigration and border protection minister, in the National Security Committee (NSC) of federal cabinet, after months of concerns about conservatives being shut out of key councils.

Mr Dutton, a long-term Abbott supporter, was dumped from the NSC last year in the cabinet reshuffle after Mr Abbott's removal.

But Mr Turnbull is not expected to offer Mr Abbott a position on the frontbench, choosing instead to promote younger conservative MPs, The Australian says.

It says that as well as Mr Dutton's expected return to the NSC, he is likely to be included in discussions setting parliamentary and political tactics.
