Peter Dutton is bucking the convention of scanning the globe to replace Australia's top cop.

The home affairs minister has ruled out bringing in an international recruit when Australian Federal Police chief Andrew Colvin stands down.

"We aren't seeking a candidate from overseas - we've got some excellent talent here domestically," Mr Dutton told 2GB radio on Thursday.

"We're working through a shortlist of names at the moment."

Mr Colvin will leave the AFP at the end of September when his five-year contract expires, drawing a close to a 30-year career in law enforcement.
