Dutton bolsters visa cancellation powers

The federal government has moved to bolster powers to cancel visas on character grounds.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton introduced draft laws to parliament on Wednesday which builds on controversial 2014 laws which automatically cancel visas for people with criminal convictions.

Under a new bill, the definition of "character concern" is broadened and confidential information in the decision-making process gets extra protection.
