The Duke of York will embark on a whirlwind tour of Australia's eastern states later this month.

Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, will touch down in Melbourne for a dinner at Government House on September 18.

From there he will visit the Royal Children's Hospital and National Gallery before witnessing an Aboriginal smoking ceremony at RMIT.

The Duke attended ANZAC commemorations in London earlier this year and will again pay tribute by laying a wreath at the Shrine of Remembrance on September 20.

His next stop will be Brisbane on September 21, where he will be briefed on the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games and then on to Sydney and Wollongong from September 25.

He will walk the deck of a Royal Australian Navy ship and visit the Sydney Cricket Ground as well as universities during his stay.

The prince will then depart for the Middle East on September 29.
