More than 600 alcohol or drug-fuelled drivers were nabbed during the horror Labour Day weekend in Victoria, which saw eight people killed on the roads.

The four-day long weekend blitz also led to 53 vehicles being impounded and more than 3700 drivers caught speeding.

Police detected 546 drink drivers and 55 drug drivers and in total recorded more than 8500 traffic offences.

The Labour Day road toll was eight in Victoria, six more than in 2013.

In the most serious of the crashes, four people were killed in a head-on smash in Victoria's north on Saturday night.

"While the large majority of road users do the right thing, unfortunately there is that minority who continue to let us down, often with tragic consequences," Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Command Robert Hill said.
