Stats show Tas drug crime crackdown

The number and quantity of illegal drug seizures across Tasmania may pale in comparison to other states but the apple isle is making strides in its crackdown on possession and trafficking.

That's according to a report from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission released on Thursday, which shows the state had the nation's greatest percentage increase in the number of amphetamine seizures for 2014-15.

There were 895 seizures for the period, compared to 175 for the previous 12 months, representing a change of more than 410 per cent.

There were almost 12,000 seizures of the same class of drugs in NSW in 2014-15.

The report also found that cannabis remained the drug of choice in Tasmania, accounting for some 95 per cent of the total weight of seized illicit drugs - "the highest proportion reported by any state or territory".

The island recorded the greatest percentage increase in cannabis-related arrests, up by 55 per cent to 1446.

Statistics for the seizure of drugs including hallucinogens, steroids, cocaine and related arrests remained in single-digits for 2014-15.

Tasmania Police Commissioner, Darren Hine, noted the results which he said will be valuable as his force works to crackdown illicit drug supply.
