Drug kingpin remains behind bars

SYDNEY, April 23 AAP - A 66-year-old alleged drug kingpin will remain behind bars after being refused bail in a Sydney court.

San Sang Chan fronted Burwood Local Court on Wednesday morning on six charges of supplying a large commercial quantity of drugs, participating in a criminal gang and knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He didn't apply for bail, which was formally refused by Magistrate Christopher Longley.

Chan and three other men aged 29, 40, 41 were caught last week in an operation police say smashed one of the biggest drug supply rings in NSW.

Last Wednesday, Chan's three co-accused were charged after officers seized 1kg of cocaine, more than 3.5kg of ice and $460,000 in cash at homes and units in Sydney's inner west, south, southwest and west.

Later the same day, 136kg of ephedrine, used to manufacture methylamphetamine or "ice", was found in a Campsie storage facility, and Chan was arrested.

The ephedrine could have been used to manufacture about 100kg of ice, worth somewhere between $90 million and $100 million, NSW police Assistant Commissioner Mark Jenkins said.

Chan's co-accused are due before Central Local Court in late May and June.

"We're confident that the four people we have before the court are major players," Mr Jenkins said.

The men aren't related.

The NSW organised crime squad, which nabbed the drugs and alleged dealers, was formed six weeks ago.

During that time, it has seized more than 150kg of drugs, more than $1.5 million cash and have laid 78 charges against 21 people.

And there would be more arrests as police continue their investigations, Mr Jenkins said.

"Ice is a filthy, insidious drug that destroys people and families," he told reporters.

"It changes the way you look and feel and it changes the way you think. It changes your body and destroys your mind very, very quickly."

Chan will require a Mandarin interpreter when he reappears before Burwood Local Court on June 16.
