Joyful moment NSW farm boy plays in mud for the first time

Little Archie Saunders, two, has never played in the mud before.

That's because it hasn't rained significantly at the family's home on a drought-stricken property at Wollomombi, near Armidale, for months.

He's only ever seen rain puddles once in his short life.

So when a welcome downpour hit yesterday, his dad Nick Saunders, 23, gave him a treat.

His mum, Nkala Frost, 22, said his dad had to encourage him to get dirty.

"He was very, very unsure and dad jumped in with him and he just absolutely loved it," she said.

"I don't know who was the bigger kid.

"We've had little bits here and there but it's been months since a big decent rainfall. It was just amazing to see really.

"It was so nice for it to leave a dint."

The couple live on the property Nick works on.

The owners have had to offload many of their sheep and cattle and are having to feed the remaining stock.

They're expecting more rain today.
