Drivers who block intersections could face higher penalties
Drivers who queue through intersections could face heavy fines or loss of demerit points as the Queensland government reassesses the penalty for the misdemeanor.
According to Queensland transport minister Mark Bailey, the current $50 fine is “too low”.
In the US and UK, the intersection is marked by a box painted on the bitumen.
Drivers who linger inside the box face heavy fines.
Mr Bailey thinks the so-called “money box” could help ease congestion, reduce road rage and increase safety in Queensland.
“It's totally unacceptable. I know when I drive I make sure there's enough room on the other side of the intersection so I'm not holding up other drivers,” Mr Bailey said.
The RACQ wants the government to start handing out the fines more often, rather than increase the amount.
