Motorist in hospital after Sydney garbage truck collision

A motorist has been taken to hospital after he became trapped when a car slammed into the back of a garbage truck this morning on a busy Sydney road.

It is believed the man was driving a van also involved in the collision. 

The crash occurred around 5.30am and resulted in the temporary closure of all southbound lanes on Pennant Hills Road in the city's northwest, and traffic was diverted to Beecroft Road.

The driver of the van suffered leg and arm injuries and was trapped for almost two hours as paramedics treated him at the scene, a NSW Fire & Rescue spokeswoman said.

The side of the van was then removed by rescue crews to access the man, who was freed around 7.27am.

He was then taken to a nearby hospital.

Commuters experienced lengthy delays caused by the accident with a traffic jam stretching back 3am forming by 7am.

All southbound lanes reopened shortly after 8am, however traffic remained heavy in the area.
