Driver over limit in school zone

A driver has blown more than twice the legal alcohol limit outside a Perth school as hundreds of thousands of students return to classes across the state.

The driver was also clocked at 15km/h over the 40km/h school zone limit, just before 8am (WST) on Monday in the northern suburb of Warwick.

When pulled over by police, the driver of the Toyota sedan was breath tested and recorded a level almost 2.5 times the legal limit.

Officers charged the motorist with speeding and excess 0.08, and issued an immediate disqualification notice.

The charge comes with an estimated record 287,000 students set to attend WA public schools, with seven new schools opening in Perth.

The opposition claims that while there are 11,000 extra students in 2014, WA schools are $183 million worse off.

"This is an assault on education in Western Australia the likes of which we've never seen," Labor leader Mark McGowan told Fairfax radio on Monday.

Teacher's unions are also launching an alliance against education cuts.

But education minister Peter Collier claims there are no teacher vacancies at public schools on day one.

"There will be a teacher in front of every classroom and we are maintaining teacher numbers at the same level as last year," Mr Collier said.
