CCTV leads to breakthrough in alleged hit and run death of Sydney grandfather

A man has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run that killed a grandfather in Sydney's south-west last week.

Zac Andreu, 73, had just left his home on Clarence Street in Condell Park when he was allegedly struck by a white Toyota Hiace van around 4pm on December 28.

Mr Andreu, who was still working full-time as a concreter, was treated at the scene but died en route to hospital. 

Police later released CCTV of a van travelling north on Clarence Street in the moments after the incident. 

A tow truck driver who was dropping of a car at a Greenacre auto wreckers recognised the damaged white van in the yard and told staff to call police.

Police seized the van yesterday for forensic examination.

A short time later, 49-year-old tiler George Geagea was arrested at a home in Greenacre and taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he has since been charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death/drive manner dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death

He was granted conditional bail and is expected to appear in court later this month.
