Driver does 200km/h in Operation Tortoise

A 23-year-old man who was allegedly clocked driving at 200km/h in a 100km/h zone on NSW's mid north coast has been charged with speeding offences and had his licence suspended.

As Easter's Operation Tortoise was being enforced by police, the man was allegedly caught travelling at double the speed limit at about 3.30pm (AEST) on Thursday on the Pacific Highway near the Macleay Valley Bridge.

Police say they stopped the Audi Quattro and arrested the driver who had two female passengers in the car.

The man was charged with speeding in a dangerous manner and exceeding the speed limit over 45kph.

His international driving licence was also suspended and the registration plates of the Audi were confiscated.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner John Hartley, said it was disappointing to see such extreme speeds and unnecessary risks being taken on the roads.

"At this speed, with two passengers, any crash would have most certainly been fatal for not only the driver, but his passengers and other road users."

The man was given strict bail conditions and will appear in Kempsey Local Court on May 26.
