An impatient driver picked the wrong car to cut in front of at a set of lights in Newcastle.

Dashcam video taken at Hunter Street in the city last Friday afternoon shows how the driver of a sports saloon car in the middle lane slows down at the lights before moving in to the far inside lane.

Road markings show the lane is for a left turn.

When the lights turn green, the sports saloon ignores the markings and accelerates quickly.

In an effort to beat traffic the driver cuts in front of a silver car in the lane next to it, pushing in before a row of parked cars blocks their way.

But a few moments later video reveals the flashing lights of an unmarked police car, which happens to be the same car that got cut off.

NSW road rules state drivers must obey road markings at intersections throughout the state.

The video was posted to DashCam Owners Australia's Facebook page last night and has been seen more than 190,000 times.

One commenter said the driver copped a dose of well-deserved punishment.

"Dead set if you can't recognize an unmarked NSW Highway car when you're sitting behind it you should probably hand in your licence," the user said.
