Driver charged over death of elderly man hit while collecting mail

A woman has been charged with negligent driving over a crash that killed an elderly man who was collecting his mail north of Sydney last week.

The BMW X3 mounted the kerb and ploughed into Noel Rosten who was at his letterbox outside his Berowra home on Berowra Waters Road at 12.25pm on February 26.

Family and friends rushed to help but the 85-year-old died at the scene.

He suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene. 

Mick Marr, a Hornsby councillor, said he had worked with Mr Rosten on a number of community projects and called him a "terrific person" and the "heart of the community".

The woman, 53, was uninjured and taken to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

She was arrested by police at her home at 6.30pm yesterday.

She has also been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death.

Her driver’s licence was also suspended and she will face Hornsby Local Court on April 4.
