'Heart of the community' killed by SUV while checking his mail

An elderly pedestrian has died after he was struck by a car while checking his mail at his home Sydney’s north.

A BMV SUV was travelling on Berowra Waters Road at Berowra, north of Hornsby, when it hit Noel Rosten, 85, about 12.25pm today. 

He suffered critical head injuries and died at the scene. 

Mick Marr, a Hornsby councillor, said he had worked with Mr Rosten on a number of community projects.

He said Mr Rosten was a "terrific person" and the "heart of the community".

"We saw something on Facebook and we said 'oh I hope its not anyone we know', and we rang up and it was unfortunately," Mr Marr said.

An avid gardener, Mr Rosten led Berowra's Clean Up Australia activities over the weekend.

The driver of the SUV, a 54-year-old woman, was uninjured in the crash and was taken to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital for mandatory testing.
