NSW Premier wasting no time with $10b Sydney Harbour rail tunnel
NSW Premier Mike Baird is wasting no time getting the $10.5 billion Rapid Transit Network with drilling underway deep beneath Sydney Harbour.
Along the 30km of new tunnels and surface rails connecting Bankstown with Chatswood and the North West.
Five new stations will be constructed and 11 existing stations will be upgraded with promises of a new train travelling each way every two minutes.
The new services will mean an extra 100,000 commuters every peak hour.
"Up to 60 percent more capacity across the network, that is something that will make a huge difference to people's daily commute," Premier Baird said.
The $10.5 billion price tag is counting on testing of the harbour floor and the rest of the route goes to plan.
The state government expects tunnelling to begin in 2017 with Sydney residents likely to see the new trains by 2024.
