Dreamworld tragedy sparks safety blitz

Queensland's workplace health and safety laws will undergo an audit in the wake of this week's Dreamworld fatalities.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the audit during an address at the Australian Labour Party (ALP) conference today on the Gold Coast.

Ms Palaszczuk said the audit was needed in response to the death of four tourists on the Thunder River Rapids ride at Dreamworld on Tuesday.

"It is simply not enough for us to be compliant with our current laws, we need to be sure our laws keep pace with international research and new technologies," Ms Palaszczuk told conference delegates.

"The audit will also consider whether existing penalties are sufficient to act as deterrents and whether these should be strengthened to contain provisions relating to gross negligence causing death."

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the inspections would be wide-ranging.

"They'll be looking at records inspection, maintenance and repair and manufacturer documentation in our theme parks," she said.

"Ride operator training and procedure records, along with controls and processes for taking out and returning equipment to service will also come under the spotlight in these safety audits."

Ms Grace said there were hopes the testing will reinstate “confidence” in families visiting theme parks.

“It’s so we can have mums and dads feel very confident that they can come to the Gold Coast and have a great holiday”.

The audits are expected to be completed by the end of November.

Candlelight vigils continue to be held at night for Canberra woman Mrs Goodchild, her brother Luke Dorsett, his partner Roozbeh Araghi, and Sydney-based Kiwi woman Cindy Low.

The theme park has announced the four trees will be planted to honour the four victims.
