Sydney man jailed for NYE Opera House bomb hoax

A Sydney man has been jailed for two years over a hoax threat to bomb the Opera House on New Year’s Eve.

Drago Reskov, 68, called the National Security Hotline at 9.58pm, on December 31^st 2017, determined to ruin the celebrations.

“There is a bomb in the Opera House. You had better move people away from the Opera House, I am warning you,” he said, before turning off his phone.

Police took the threat seriously and swarmed the iconic building, but no bomb was found.

Reskov made the threatening call from inside his car, parked opposite the Manly Leagues Club at Brookvale, he later turned himself into Dee Why police.

Today, he was sentenced to a minimum 18 months behind bars.

“In the current climate the community is on alert, this activity was designed to strike terror into the heart of people out to enjoy a good night; the mothers, the children, the fathers, all there to enjoy one of the finest nights in Sydney,” Magistrate Erin Kennedy said.

Reskov pleaded guilty to the hoax.

The part time labourer was previously convicted over dumping rocks on the Harbour Bridge.

On his release, he will be monitored for three years.
