All the roads where double demerits don't apply this Easter long weekend

Plenty of Aussies are planning road trips this Easter long weekend despite wild fuel prices and risk copping double demerits if they break road rules.

But not all states and territories enforce double demerits over the Easter period.

Here's what you need to know about double demerit dates and penalties this weekend.

Double demerits in NSW, ACT and WA

Double demerits will be enforced for five consecutive days over the Easter long weekend in NSW, the ACT and WA.

The double demerit period started on Thursday, April 2 and will run through Monday, April 6.

There will be a second double demerit period at the end of April for the ANZAC Day long weekend, which will run from Friday April 24 to Monday April 27.

Double demerits apply to offences like speeding, drink or drug driving, seatbelt and mobile phone offences.

Running a red light also results in double demerits in WA.

Demerit points issued for infringements are doubled during these periods, but fines remain the same.

Queensland

Unlike other states and territories, Queensland actually applies double demerits to specific offences year-round.

Double demerits apply when a motorist commits a certain second or subsequent offence within a year of previous offending.

The rules apply to common offences like speeding more than 20km/h above the limit and using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

Fines aren't doubled when a motorist cops double demerits.

SA, NT, Victoria and Tasmania

Easter double demerits aren't a thing in SA, NT, Victoria and Tasmania.

In fact, none of those jurisdictions enforce double demerit periods at any time of year, including over holiday long weekend periods.

Even so, motorists are reminded to drive safely over the busy Easter long weekend.
