Domestic violence a national emergency: MP

A new federal government funding package to combat domestic violence focuses on ensuring women and children are safe in their own homes.

Minister for Women Michaelia Cash agreed the frequency of acts of violence against women and children, including two major cases in NSW this week, constitute a "national emergency".

"One of the things that I want to see is women and children can stay home - why should they be the ones that have to flee the family home and go and seek refuge in a shelter," she told Nine Network on Thursday.

The $41 million-plus package to be announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Melbourne will include measures to upgrade home security.

"We are (also) going to be working with the states and territories who want to partner the government in relation to the trialling of GPS technology and panic buttons," Senator Cash added.

"So if you are a high risk offender and you are basically challenging a woman, we are going to put an ankle bracelet on you so we know where you are at all times."
