Woman calls for action after dog dies following attack in Melbourne park

A video has emerged showing the dramatic moment a woman's beloved King Charles Cavalier was savagely mauled by another dog in Melbourne.

The last moment Shani Francis enjoyed time with her precious, Ruby was cut short last Saturday during a walk with her friend, Rachel, in Clyde, in the city's south west.

An unleashed dog raced towards them, heading straight for Ruby's throat.

"It was horrific, she looked like a little rag doll toy," Ms Francis, said.

Rachel grabbed what she believes to be a Mastiff cross Great Dane by the scruff, allowing Ms Francis to break Ruby free.

"Picked her up, and I remember moving away thinking, 'if this dog still wants Ruby, we are both going to be in a lot of trouble here," she said .

But the out of control animal then turned on Bucky, Rachel's Staffy cross.

As the savage attack unfolded, he too was badly bitten.

Bucky will be okay. But several surgeries and eleven thousand dollars later, Ruby though lost her fight.

"It was just too much for her little body, but she tried really hard," Ms Francis, said.

"Scraped together everything we had. On Monday I had 26 cents in my bank account with a maxed-out credit card."

After the attack, the women stood on the footpath, holding their severely bleeding animals.

The owner of the killer dog though, immediately left the scene, quickly driving away, without exchanging details.

The legalities of dog attacks are enforceable by local council.

But that isn't good enough for Ms Francis.

She's started a petition calling for change and wants exchanging details to be mandatory following an animal attack.

"I think there needs to be tougher penalties on people who are going to be cowards and do that," she said.
