Olympic diving legend Chantelle Newbery tells how she hit rock bottom over a drugs charge

Former Olympic diving legend Chantelle Newbery has revealed she considered taking her life at the time she pleaded guilty to drug charges.

In an exclusive interview with Tracy Grimshaw for Channel Nine’s A Current Affair, the Athens gold medal winner said she had sought help from a GP and specialist after having suicidal thoughts.

Earlier this month the 37-year-old was placed on a drug diversion program after admitting possession of a quantity of methamphetamine and failing to properly dispose of syringes.

It marked a dramatic fall from grace for the former golden girl of Aussie diving. 

"There have been times in the last few weeks especially around the time of the court case I knew I was slipping into a place where I was a little bit worried. I did actually go to a GP and get another referral to get help again," Ms Newbery said.

“I had never been in trouble with the law before,” she told Grimshaw. And she admitted: “They did find drug paraphernalia.”

Asked if she had resorted to trying drugs in her pain, Ms Newbery said:  "Yeah I have experimented with a couple of things but I wouldn't say I was a drug user no".
