Disabled park faux pas a mistake: Glasson

Unloading your car in a disabled parking spot is never a good idea, especially when you are working on a high-profile political campaign.

But Liberal National Party (LNP) Griffith candidate Bill Glasson says a campaign volunteer caught on camera was unaware he had committed the parking faux pas.

He says the 70-year-old volunteer pulled up to unload a car, but moved as soon as someone pointed out it was in a disabled bay.

"This was an unfortunate, but not deliberate, mistake," Dr Glasson said in a statement.

"The volunteer involved would never knowingly use a disabled parking spot."

Dr Glasson defended the man after disability advocates expressed outrage on social media over a photo showing his campaign team blocking a disabled parking spot.

The picture shows a supporter in a Bill Glasson shirt and a banner displaying the candidate's face in the spot.

When asked about the incident, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was reluctant to politicise the issue but said, "No one should ever park in someone with a disability's car park."

Dr Glasson agrees.

"Disabled parking bays are for disabled drivers only and shouldn't be used by able-bodied people, if only for a short time," he said.
