A diesel spill has at Melbourne’s Warringal Private Hospital has forced staff to turn patients away or relocate them.

Fire crews are at the hospital on Burgundy Street, Heidelberg, after a mechanical malfunction inside the pump room caused 700 litres of fuel to spill just after noon today.

The fuel is leaking from the roof through to the fourth level, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) said in a statement.

“Crews are attempting to contain the spill and stop it spreading,” the MFB said.

In-patients are being relocated, and the hospital is not accepting any more patients.

Motorists have been advised to keep clear of the area surrounding Burgundy Street as fire crews work to clean up the leak.
