DFAT knew couple abandoned twin in India

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop insists her department did nothing wrong despite knowing an Australian couple abandoned one of their surrogate twins in India.

A NSW couple left their son with an Indian family in 2012, saying they already had a boy and wanted a daughter to complete their family, Freedom of Information documents obtained by the ABC reveal.

The foreign affairs department queried the case at the time, concerned the child could become stateless, but Ms Bishop says it was out of their hands and a matter for Indian authorities.
