DFAT criticised over aid transparency

The foreign affairs department has been criticised for a "demonstrable reduction in transparency" over the presentation of aid figures in budget papers.

Labor frontbencher Penny Wong took officials to task for not providing regional breakdowns, official development assistance forward estimates, and ending the practice of providing a budget blue book on aid.

Department secretary Peter Varghese, appearing before a Senate committee on Wednesday, said it had been Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's decision to make changes to how aid figures were presented and the information was readily available on the DFAT website.
