SA Pathology cuts could delay diagnosis

South Australians with serious illnesses could face delays in being diagnosed if proposed job cuts at SA Pathology go ahead, some medical professionals say.

Professionals Australia, a group representing medical scientists and technical officers, says SA Health plans to cut about 300 SA Pathology jobs to trim costs.

The group is calling on Health Minister Jack Snelling to abandon the plan, which it warns would lead to South Australians waiting longer for medical test results.

"People suffering from serious illnesses will have to wait longer for results and longer to start what is often life-saving treatment," SA Professionals Australia director Sarah Andrews said in a statement.

"Successful medical treatment depends on accurate and timely diagnosis."

Ms Andrews said the medical scientists are holding a crisis meeting on Tuesday to decide on their response, which could include industrial action.

"At the moment all options are on the table," she said.

SA Pathology's Pathology Director Glenn Edwards said the organisation is consulting with staff, unions and other stakeholders on the proposed reconfiguration of its services.

"We are committed to implementing these improvements," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Dr Edwards said SA Pathology will release more information to staff and unions later this month, seeking their feedback.
