Defence is trying out its ability to transport troops and equipment from ship to shore ahead of the cyclone season.

Exercise Sea Raider in far north Queensland will involve the Navy's new large landing ship HMAS Canberra which is carrying 1400 troops, helicopters, landing craft, boats and trucks.

"The exercise is a rehearsal for future humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions as well as civilian evacuations across a broad landscape," said amphibious taskforce commander Captain Jay Bannister.
