Deer captured after morning of chaos in Sydney CBD

The deer spotted gallivanting around inner-city Sydney this morning, leaving motorists stunned and trains delayed, has been captured and euthanised.

After six hours of chaos, the deer was caught in the gardens of the Greek orthodox Church of Australia, near Central Station.

In a joint effort by NSW Police and specialists from Taronga Zoo, the deer was tranquillised for 10 to 15 minutes and escorted under lights and sirens to the zoo.

Upon arrival, the deer was examined by Taronga Zoo's senior veterinarian Larry Vogelnest.

"Health checks determined it was a wild female adult deer that had sustained multiple injuries and was underweight and the decision was made to humanely euthanise her," Taronga Zoo said in a statement.

NSW Police received the first report of the animal at 5.25am at the Allen Street exit off the Anzac Bridge in Pyrmont.

"City-bound motorists are warned to take extra care after a deer was seen in the Pyrmont area about 5.30am," NSW Police said in a statement.

"Anyone who sees the deer is urged not to approach it and call police."

A caller to Ben Fordham's breakfast show on 2GB said he saw a van accidentally bump the deer at the same location.

Other callers spotted the deer while driving on Harris Street, Pyrmont.

After an unsuccessful attempt to capture the deer in the Pyrmont area, NSW Police Detective Inspector David El-Badawi told Fordham police sought assistance from animal groups.

"We've got RSPCA giving us a hand and the good people at Taronga Zoo said they'd come down," Mr El-Badawi said.

The deer eventually made its way to the train tracks at Central Station, leaving commuters on Western Line services delayed up to 17 minutes, Sydney Trains said in a tweet.

The sighting comes one week after a deer, believed to be the same one as today, was spotted with another running through the streets of Sydney's inner-west.

CCTV footage captured the deer jumping along streets and hiding in backyards of Leichhardt, Annandale and Balmain.

One of the deer was euthanised by the RSPCA after it was found distressed in a Leichhardt unit complex.
