The questions Warner didn't answer

Ultimately, David Warner's press conference left a deep sense of dissatisfaction.

It felt staged, like the former vice-captain had too many paid opinions in his ear when he entered the room.

He took a swing at his chance of redemption and missed. Once it was all over, called to a halt by his manager, we were all left with more questions than answers.

And David knows it.

In a series of tweets soon after he left the offices of Cricket NSW, he said he was hamstrung by "process".

Fair enough - but Steve Smith and Cam Bancroft are also bound by the same constraints, yet they did much more to win back trust.

It looks like we will have to wait for Cricket Australia's full report to learn:

Whose idea was it? If it wasn’t Warner's he is certainly carrying the can for it.

Who knew? Just three players doesn't cut it.

Has he, or any other Australian done this before? Be honest if it has, because it's the planning, the use of sandpaper, that makes us cringe as a nation.

Have his Australian teammates cut him adrift? It certainly looks that way.

Will he play for Australia again? Probably.

What role did the bitter and deeply personal sledging war in South Africa play in hatching this cheating scheme? Only he knows.

Will he retire altogether? Not likely.

Will he appeal the severity of his punishment? Almost certainly. 

For the next 12 months David will be father and husband first. He is fortunate to have that solace.

Candice has endured more than most people will ever experience. She has been the subject of the most vile and puerile abuse.

Yet she has come through stronger and holds her head high. She is a present, devoted mum.

Australia will embrace them again if Warner lets his guard down and speaks from the heart, not a script.
