Former Supreme Court judge David Levine has been appointed the new Inspector of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

Premier Barry O'Farrell said in a statement on Thursday Mr Levine was the Inspector of the Police Integrity Commission and it made sense for him to have oversight of the ICAC as well.

Mr Levine served as a judge on the Supreme Court of NSW for 13 years during his 20-year tenure on the bench, as well as President of a Defence Force Board of Inquiry and chair of the Serious Offenders Review Council.

He takes over from outgoing ICAC Inspector Harvey Cooper AM.

Mr Levine's appointment expires on January 31, 2017.
