David Bowie's modern art collection to go on tour before being auctioned off

The extensive art collection of late singer David Bowie will be auctioned at Sotheby’s later this year.

Bowie’s 380-piece collection, which includes valuable works by Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, is an eclectic blend of modern masters.

Among the most valuable pieces in the collection is the 1984 painting ‘Air Power’ by New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

English auction house Sotheby's estimated the painting would fetch at least two million pounds ($AU3.3 million).

Before going on the block, the artworks will be curated into a touring art exhibit.  

The collection will be displayed in London until August 20, before visiting Los Angeles, New York and Hong Kong.

The three-part auction will occur on November 10 and 11 in London.

The auction house said the expansive collection reflected Bowie’s "famously inquisitive mind".

The Life On Mars singer was known to be an avid art collector, and had a preference for obscure, contemporary pieces.

Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the pop era, Bowie has been credited with creating the “glam” genre.

He died aged 69 on January 10, after a lengthy private battle with cancer.
