David and Goliath battle over four-metre granite statue in Melbourne front yard

It's neighbour against neighbour in the Melbourne suburb of Caroline Springs, after a four-metre granite copy of Michelangelo’s "Statue of David" was craned into a front yard a few weeks ago.

Robert and Rose live across the road from the statue and can see it from many rooms inside their home, as well as their backyard.

The couple told 9NEWS they feel the statue is inappropriate for the area.

"Unlike anyone else in the neighbourhood, we have to live with it 24-7, there is no escaping it," Rose said.

But the owners of the statue are not budging and said it is nobody else's business.

"At the end of the day, it's something I got for myself," owner Amanda Perkovic said.

"I didn't think you needed approval from your neighbours or society to put something in your house."

Some neighbours are worried about the statue being exposed to children, but Ms Perkovic said it's not about the nudity, it's about "the beauty of the sculpting".

The local council appears to agree with Ms Perkovic, ruling that the statue may stay.
