Man charged over Darwin shootings

A man has been charged over the alleged mass shooting in Darwin which left four people dead.

Benjamin Hoffman, 45, has been charged with four counts of murder, two counts of recklessly endanger serious harm and one count of criminal damage.

He was remanded in custody to appear via video link in Darwin Local Court at 10am today.

Meanwhile, the fourth victim has been named.

Nigel Hellings, 75, was allegedly shot at his home at Gardens Hill Crescent.

The other victims have been named as Michael Sisois, 57, who was at the Buff Club when he was allegedly shot and killed in the car park.

Security guard Rob Courtney, 52, was allegedly gunned down in front of his housemate in Jolly St, Woolner.

Hassan Baydoun, 33, originally from Lebanon, had been driving his taxi but returned home to his studio apartment in McMinn St on Tuesday evening for a meal break, where he was killed.

Police were first notified of the incident at 5.45pm on Tuesday when they received reports of a man armed with a shotgun firing rounds in the Darwin CBD.

Further charges were expected to be laid, a police statement said.

Hoffman has undergone surgery in a Darwin hospital for apparent knife wounds "sustained prior" to being Tasered and arrested by police.

He only knew two of the four men he is accused of shooting and killing.

One of the men he knew is believed to be the 52-year-old Darwin casino security guard Rob Courtney, appears to have tried to defend himself and stabbed the gunman.<

He is also believed to have known Mr Sisois, while Mr Baydoun and Mr Hellings are believed to have never met the gunman but were caught up in the rampage while the killer was looking for a person.
