Darwin prisoners busted trying to sneak back into jail

It’s not often that a prisoner is caught trying to break into jail, but that was the case at a Darwin prison last week when five inmates were caught returning to the facility with a collection of contraband.

Prison guards responded to an altercation at Darwin Correctional Centre at 12.35am on July 20, discovering five inmates intoxicated and fighting over a mobile phone.

CCTV footage showed at least four of the prisoners had jumped a fence at the correctional centre between 7pm and 11pm earlier in the evening.

They were found carrying five mobile phones, tobacco, bottles of alcohol and a ‘green leafy substance’ believed to be marijuana.

A spokesman for the Northern Territory Department of Correctional Services said the return-escapees had been in a low-security section of the Berrimah facility.

They have been transferred to maximum security while awaiting charges for their foiled attempt to re-enter the prison.
