Darwin jockey Melanie Tyndall dies from a fall during race

A jockey has died after a fall at the Darwin Turf Club today.

Melanie Tyndall, 32, who was a police officer, was competing in the third race of the day at Fannie Bay when she was dislodged from her mount, Restless, near the 300-metre mark.  

A statement released by Thoroughbred Racing NT and the Darwin Turf Club said Restless "appeared to clip the heels of another runner" which caused Ms Tyndall to become "unbalanced".

On-course paramedics immediately tended to Ms Tyndall and she was then transported to Royal Darwin Hospital by St John Ambulance.

But despite further medical care, Ms Tyndall passed away. 

Thoroughbred Racing NT's Chief Executive, Andrew O'Toole said Ms Tyndall's death "would be felt by many within the industry".

"On behalf of the NT racing industry, I would like to extend our thoughts and heartfelt condolences to Melanie's family and friends on her passing," he said.

Darwin Turf Club Chairman, Brett Dixon, said the Darwin Turf Club and its Board and Members were "deeply saddened by the passing of Melanie". 

"Our sincerest condolences and support is extended to Melanie's family and friends," he said.

In a statement, the Acting Police Commissioner for the Northern Territory, Michael Murphy said Constable Tyndall was a "respected member of Casuarina Police Station".

"This is an incredibly difficult time for her partner, family, friends, colleagues and the wider police family," he said. 

"Melanie had forged deep and strong ties in our small community and police are providing every possible support to her family.

"I have spoken with her partner and father and assured them that the police family stands ready to help in whatever way we can.

"I want to extend my sincere condolences to Melanie's family and everyone affected by her passing."

Ms Tyndall's death comes just a day after 22-year-old jockey, Mikaela Claridge, died from undisclosed injuries when she fell from her horse during routine trackwork yesterday at Cranbourne, Claridge.
