Andrews launches safe schools platform by promising removal of asbestos

Labor leader Daniel Andrews has today targeted marginal seats in Melbourne's south-east, with a $100 million school infrastructure pledge.

Mr Andrews inspected asbestos-riddled classrooms, and outlined plans to have them all removed from government schools by 2020.

He has pledged $50 million to restart the school audit program, and remove asbestos that poses an immediate risk.

Another $50 million would be used to accelerate the replacement of 250 older portable classrooms.

"This is an ambitious target, and it's a significant commitment, but it's one that I think is critically important," Mr Andrews said.

Earlier he called into Chelsea Kindergarten, in the marginal electorate of Mordialloc, to announce a $350,000 upgrade.

Also in the city's south-east, Treasurer Michael O'Brien spent the morning with the Smith family in Sandhurst. 

Armed with a giant wad of cash, he ramped up his attack on Labor's policy costings.

"For every single household in Victoria, that amounts to a $15,000 bill to pay for Labor's promises," he said.

Labor says it plans to release its full policy costings tomorrow, in line with past opposition practice.
