Fire boss offers resignation after racking up seven speeding fines

Victoria's fire boss Dan Stephens offered to resign after learning he had racked up seven speeding fines since arriving in Australia and starting the top job in May.

Mr Stephens told Melbourne radio 3AW he made the offer this week, after receiving the fines for speeding up to 115km/h on the M1 freeway between Melbourne and Geelong, but it was rejected.

The chief, who moved from the UK for the position, said the board felt the situation "may not be as (he) perceived it to be", but said that he takes full responsibility for the behaviour.

"To be absolutely clear and for the avoidance of any doubt, there is no justification whatsoever for this," Mr Stephens said.

"I take full responsibility for my actions and I can only sincerely apologise, which I do on behalf of the MFB, and to all the residents of Melbourne and Victoria.

"I am the head of the fire and rescue service and in this instance, my conduct falls a long way short."

Mr Stephens said he received his first fine in the mail early in July.

He received another four or five others this week - three of which were from the same day - prompting his resignation offer.

The chief noted that he is still adjusting to the speed limits on Australian motorways - with the limit in the UK being 70 miles/hr, equivalent to about 113km/hr - but that the adjustment was no excuse.

"The fact is that it's not the UK," he said.

Mr Stephens said he will apply to have some of the tickets amalgamated.

"I will submit myself to the process and I should be treated no differently to anyone else."
