'To swim a little bit': Police respond to backpackers choosing to swim as ex-Cyclone Alfred hits Bryon Bay
A pair of backpackers were seen going for a swim as ex-cyclone Alfred lashed Byron Bay this morning.
The men were seen in the wild water, despite warnings to stay out of the ocean in the dangerous weather.
The pair were immediately swept up to 300m down the main beach at the tourist spot, where many have been gathering to see the ferocious ocean.

Locals on the shore called NSW Police and the Westpac rescue helicopter was put on standby.
After safely emerging from the water, one of the men told 9News he went in "to swim a little bit".
The pair was seen being spoken to by NSW Police.

Just over the border, Gold Coast City Council is threatening beachgoers and surfers with a $16,000 fine for reckless actions in the water amid the weather.
"Although the large waves may be exciting to witness, we need everyone to stay well away from coastal areas for your own safety. No photograph or video is worth your life," a Gold Coast City spokesperson said.
